Diamondville CPU: Intel presents Atom 230 and Atom N270

intel-atomSilicon Valley chipmaker Intel just officially rolled out the second wave of Atom processors at the Computex techshow in Taiwan. One CPU is suited for cheap and ultra portable notebooks, so-called “Netbooks”. The other processor is optimized for “Netbooks”, conventional desktop PCs.

The Netbook version, the Atom N270, runs at 1.6 GHz, FSB533, comes with 512 KB L2 cache and has a thermal design power rating of 2.5 watts. The Nettop version, named the Atom 230, also runs at 1.6 GHz, FSB533, comes with 512 KB L2 cache and has a thermal design power rating of 4 watts. The chipmaker did not release more technical specifications about the two Diamondville versions.

Both processors are based on Intel’s Diamondville single-core chip architecture, a slightly modified version of the original Silverthorne chip.

Specifically the small Nettops are pretty much the hottest segment these days: More and more pc makers are trying to catch up on the success of the highly popular Asus EEE PC. The latest hardware companies to join the Nettop bandwagon are HP and Dell.
