Sure you may have been hobnobbing at several conferences, and may not have had too much mind-space to keep a tab on everything, but what everyone who attended the Oracle OpenWorld did notice is that Oracle didn’t really have much to offer or talk about.
Sure, there was quite some excitment about the Beehive (new collaboration product) and its new hardware device (data warehousing tool that will now play catch-up with Greenplum), but Oracle didn’t break much new ground.
The only really exciting and honest statements were from CEO Larry Ellison about cloud computing, who called all the hype about it complete gibberish.
The problem is that every tech company now wants to be associated with cloud computing, no matter if their products and services meet the basic criteria. At least Ellison isn’t afraid to address the hijacking of the phrase by marketers, including Oracle’s.
So while Oracle didn’t have much to say, we are happy it didn’t have too much boasting to do unlike some other companies who tend to go over the roof with it.
Oracle OpenWorld that brought more than 43,000 people to San Francisco to explore what application and database products Oracle has to offer, has definitely been successful in every intended way. Here’s a summing up of some of the most crucial launches.
The Oracle Beehive Collaboration Platform was one of the most watched out for launches aimed at integrating enterprise communications, and can tie together e-mail, calendars, instant messaging and conferencing applications on one platform. The HP Oracle Database Machine was next a hardware product aimed at disrupting the data warehousing market. At the center of the product is the Exadata Storage Server, which supports up to 12 terabytes of raw storage. The hardware for this will be manufactured exclusively by HP.
Cloud Computing, undoubtedly was another of the phenomena in which Oracle showed some start avenues. First, it agreed to license Oracle Database 11g, Fusion Middleware and Oracle Enterprise Manager products for Amazon Web Services’ Elastic Compute Cloud. Oracle also announced a partnership with Intel to push for the expansion of standards such as the Open Virtual Machine Format to speed enterprise adoption of cloud computing. Then there was the Oracle Webcenter Suite which combines technology from Oracle Fusion Middleware and BEA Systems, which Oracle acquired earlier this year.
This was followed by the Oracle E-business Suite, Oracle VM, and the Oracle Insurance Vertical. What was not spoken about but was heavily questioned regarding was the Oracle Database 11g.

Guess what Oracle and Intel are doing on a starry night? No, they aren’t busy stargazing, they are busy coud-watching. Yeah, you got it right. The two tech majors are teaming up to give the best of cloud computing to corporate clients.
They are collaborating on improving the efficiency, security, and standards-based technology for pushing programs and data storage into virtual clouds. collaborating on improving the efficiency, security, and standards-based technology for pushing programs and data storage into virtual clouds.
And if you’re wondering what would happen to security amidst all this? They plan to integrate the data encryption services for customers using cloud computing. They also plan to collaborate with other industry players to enable portability of virtual machine images and creating web services standards for securing and managing cloud-based services.
